Diamond Head Theatre was aglow this holiday season as it celebrated its presentation of My Fair Lady in 2023. Seven shows ran until December 30.
The unrefined Eliza Doolittle, a rough Cockney girl, met Colonel Pickering and Henry Higgins in Covent Garden where she sold flowers. When Higgins remarked that he could help Eliza speak properly and raise her status, Pickering challenged him to do so, and Eliza took him up on the offer. Though difficult and frustrating for both Eliza and Higgins at first, the lessons soon began to work wonders, and produced results that neither could predict.
The Diamond Head Theatre cast included: Anna Young as Eliza Doolittle, Garrett Hols and David Young as Henry Higgins, Betty Bolton as Mrs. Higgins, Andrew Erwin as Freddie Eynsford-Hill, Lisa Fosbender as Mrs. Pierce, Eli Foster as Colonel Pickering, and Miles Phillips as Alfred Doolittle.
Nearing its 60th anniversary since its Broadway debut, My Fair Lady was adapted by Alan Jay Lerner (book and lyrics) and Frederick Loewe (music) from the 1913 play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw. Beloved songs included: “Wouldn’t it be Loverly?,” “With a Little Bit of Luck,” “I Could Have Danced All Night,” and “On the Street Where You Live.” The show set a record for the longest Broadway run of its time and enjoyed several revivals. My Fair Lady won six Tony awards, including Best Musical, and was later adapted into a film in 1964 starring Audrey Hepburn. Check out more of our upcoming shows.
